Today marks the centenary of the death of Valentin Louis Georges Eugène Marcel Proust, better known as Marcel Proust.
The Centenary of the death of Marcel Proust

On Noveber 18th, 1922 Proust died of pneumonia in Paris, after refusing medical treatment, at the age of 51.

Known for his most important novel "A la recherche du temps perdu" ('In Search of Lost Time', in English), written between 1908 and 1922, Proust proposes the aesthetic doctrine that (in the words of Antoine Compagnon): 'art cannot be compared to life, it transcends it, since it is true life; the creative self is not the social self, the artist creates by going into himself'.

Among his other works, we should highlight: 'Les Plaisirs et les Jours' ('The Pleasures and The Days', in English), 'Pastiches et Mélanges', 'Jean Santeuil' (posthumous) and 'Contre Sainte-Beuve' (posthumous essay).
